Taste of Cinema: 10 Movies Banned for Bizarre Reasons

Commonly accepted standards of decency and rectitude vary wildly throughout the world and have changed enormously as the decades have passed. Foul language, blasphemy and displays of flesh that wouldn’t raise an eyebrow in New York, Tokyo or Paris today would have caused public outrage in Amsterdam, Chicago or London thirty or forty years ago. Britain in the 1980s, in fact, under the self-appointed moral guide of Mary Whitehouse, was at the vanguard of the “ban and block” brigade which saw dozens of films (mainly lurid horror movies with gaudily shocking titles such as THE EVIL DEAD, DRILLER KILLER and I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE) pulled from theatres and VHS video-rental shop shelves because of ‘obscene’ violence and sexual content that would most probably pass for broadcasting even on some TV channels nowadays. Similarly, Hollywood saw its output under attack by the censors in the late 1940s and 1950s for paranoid political reasons under the House on Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) whose McCarthyist outlook interpreted many movies to have underlying subversive communist messages hidden in them and consequently banned them as well as preventing many directors and other movie professionals from working in the USA altogether, ruining many promising careers and innocent lives in the process.

The focus of the film censor’s attention has constantly shifted too — from religious blasphemy and political controversy, through nudity and immorality, to swearing and sexual violence. Looking back at the long list of films which have been banned at various times, it is not difficult to see why some works, whilst widely accepted as being of great artistic merit, have attracted the ire of the world’s censors. “SALÒ, OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM” (Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1975), for example, which is an allegorical representation of Italy under Fascism and based on the Marquis de Sade’s scandalously controversial novel, with its harrowing scenes of relentless sadism, nihilistic violence, torture and extreme sexual deviance, possibly has something to offend almost everyone’s sensibilities in one way or another, no matter how liberal-minded they might be!  Some other bans, however, are less easy to understand or rationalise (by modern-day Western standards at least) and it is these which shall be examined in the following list.

BACK TO THE FUTURE (Robert Zemeckis, 1985)
Set in what used to be considered the distant future but has now become the recent past (2015) and correctly predicting the advent of unmanned drones, hover-boards and video-phones, this highly popular and much-loved sci-fi/comedy starred Michael J. Fox as a slack teenager accidentally upsetting the space-time continuum whilst shuttling between the present and the future in a time-travelling car built by an eccentric scientist played by Christopher Lloyd. It has been effectively withdrawn in China since 2011 by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television because of its frivolous treatment of serious historical events. The country’s authorities actively discourage or prohibit the broadcast of works of fiction that deal with the subject of time-travel, myth and superstitious beliefs. Whilst not technically an absolute ban, to go against the state’s advice on what or what not to show publicly is considered detrimental or even ruinous to a career in domestic film-making or broadcasting. The “no playing around with time” rule also rules out THE X-FILES and THE TERMINATOR from being shown there.

MONKEY BUSINESS (Norman McLeod, 1931)
The Marx Brothers were a farcical comedy act from New York with vaudeville origins who enjoyed success on the radio, stage and at the cinema. Their third film outing saw Groucho, Zeppo, Chico and Harpo getting mixed up in comic shenanigans with feuding gangsters and kidnappers whilst on board a transatlantic ship and then onshore in the United States. The country of Ireland, which was gripped by internal political tension at the time of the film’s release, banned it because of the fear that the four protagonists’ non-conformist behaviour onscreen could lead to an anarchic uprising in the streets at home. Strangely, the ban continued right up until the year 2000.

APOCALYPSE NOW (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979)
Adapted from Joseph Conrad’s novella about an ivory trading company employee’s voyage up the Congo river — ‘Heart of Darkness’ — and transplanted to the Vietnam War where Marlon Brando’s Colonel Kurtz has “gone native” from the horrors of combat and is now hiding amongst an indigenous tribe who worship him as a God. He is tracked down through war-torn jungle and hellish scenes of devastation into Cambodia by a heavy-drinking and hallucinating US Army Captain played by a young Martin Sheen. Revered since its release by movie-goers and critics alike, it received an Oscar for Best Cinematography at the 52nd Academy Awards and was awarded the Palme D’or at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival. Despite being almost universally lauded for its poignant depiction of the brutality, savage hypocrisies and atrocities of conflict, South Korea’s president and military general, Park Chung-hee, refused importation of the movie because he thought it made war look bad.

THE BOHEMIAN GIRL (James Horne & Charley Rogers, 1936)
Featuring the comedic duo Laurel and Hardy, which comprised Englishman Stan Laurel and his American partner Oliver Hardy who appeared in over one hundred films together from the 1920s to 1940s, THE BOHEMIAN GIRL was based on an 1843 operetta of the same name. The film was an innocent tale of Gypsy folk, princesses and palaces set in 18th century Bohemia (now a region of the Czech Republic but back then part of the Austrian Empire). However, it was banned in Germany on its release because it depicted Gypsies (also known as Roma) in a favourable and romantic light. Under the Nuremberg Laws that the Nazi regime had installed the previous year, which had the effect of disenfranchising any non-Aryan — that is, not of German blood — residents of Germany, the Gypsies were considered to be ‘sub-human’, along with Jews, homosexuals and the intellectually disabled, and were prohibited from being shown in public at all. To add to its ‘crimes’, the film also showed the Gypsies being persecuted by the authority figure of the story (an Austrian Count) which, while only a work of fiction in itself, seemed to chillingly foreshadow the dark days that would befall that part of Europe in the years to come.

E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL (Steven Spielberg, 1982)
This tale of a peaceful alien stranded on Earth trying to get back to his home planet with the help of a ten-year-old boy was inspired by the director Steven Spielberg’s own imaginary interstellar friend of the 1960s which he used as an emotional crutch after after his parents divorced. It was a massive worldwide hit and by 1983 had become the highest-grossing release of all-time, aided by (and, in return, spurring on) a huge global tie-in merchandise campaign featuring everything from E.T.-branded napkins and pencils, through to video games and pillowcases. Although the film was aimed directly at its target-market of children, Scandinavian countries, usually known for their progressive social policies and accommodating attitudes towards minors, prohibited anyone under the age of twelve from seeing it as they thought the movie portrayed adults to be the enemy of children and feared that it could cause an international juvenile rebellion against grown-ups.

KING KONG (Merian Cooper & Ernest Shoedsack, 1933)
There have been numerous versions and adaptations of the famous giant-beast-terrorises-city story but it is the 1933 original, starring Fay Wray as the skyscraper-climbing ape’s object of romantic desire, which is recognised by the USA’s Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically and aesthetically significant”. One of the reasons that it is considered so important in film-making history is its groundbreaking use of techniques such as stop-motion animation and rear projection. This caused it be withdrawn from Finland who banned it because they feared the special-effects were too realistic, violent and terrifying for public viewing. It was finally released to Finnish theatres in 1939 after censorship cuts had been made to the goriest scenes in the movie.

GOLDFINGER (Guy Hamilton, 1964)
The third movie of the highly successful James Bond franchise pitted Sean Connery’s “agent 007” against an evil megalomaniac who is planning to wreck the global economy by raiding Fort Knox and rendering its gold reserves worthless by means of a radioactive “dirty bomb”. It is fondly remembered for its hit theme tune written by John Barry and sung by Shirley Bassey, and also for the specially equipped Aston Martin DB5 which featured in it. The state of Israel, however, pulled the film from cinemas when it became known that Karl Gerhart Fröbe (also known as Gert Frobe), the German actor who played the precious-metal-loving villain of the title, had formerly been a member of the Nazi party. He had joined the junior arm of the movement when he was sixteen years old but tried to leave in 1937 as a protest against their political and social policies. The film’s ban was later lifted when a Jewish escapee from the holocaust, Mario Blumenau, revealed to the Israeli government that Fröbe had actually saved his family’s life during the Holocaust by hiding them from the Nazis.

BRIEF ENCOUNTER (David Lean, 1945)
Based on a stage-play by Noël Coward, this popular black and white classic is often remembered for its haunting use of Rachmaninoff’s melancholic 2nd Piano Concerto in the score. The story centres on a British man and a woman, both married to other people, who meet by chance at a railway station and begin an ill-fated affair. Ireland, an almost-entirely Catholic country which at that time was governed in a quasi-theocratic style, had passed in 1923 the ‘Censorship of Films Act’ which served to ‘protect’ the public from morally corrupting influences. The film’s theme of adultery, and its permissive and sympathetic treatment of it, earned it the censors’ displeasure and it was subsequently banned.

GRAPES OF WRATH (John Ford, 1940)
This film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel starred Henry Fonda and showed an Oklahoma family’s migration to California in order to escape the midwestern Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. Although it dealt with the issues of squalor, homelessness and poverty that were being suffered in the greatest capitalist country in the world at that time, it was still banned in Russia by Joseph Stalin because he thought it would appear to his citizens that, contrary to Soviet states, even the poorest and most miserable Americans could still afford to have their own car! Paradoxically, the original book by Nobel Prize-winner John Steinbeck was also dismissed by the Associated Farmers of California who, conversely, labelled it “communist propaganda”.

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (David Silverman, 2007)

Whilst it didn’t win an Academy Award and was not entered into competition at any of the serious European film festivals, the movie spin-off of Matt Groening’s animated TV series about an underachieving little boy with spiky hair and his dysfunctional family is widely considered to be just a harmless bit of fun. It comes as a surprise to learn then, that the inscrutable government of Burma (now known as Myanmar) have prohibited the film from public release and that, even more bizarrely, the reason quoted is because of the use of the colours red and yellow. It is not generally known what the significance of this particular colour-scheme is to the military junta that has ruled the country since 1962. It is possible that they did not wish to show anything that might be associated with the civil conflict between the Red Shirts and Yellow Shirts of neighbouring Thailand, or it could be that those shades are too similar to the colour scheme used by Burma’s own internal rebel movement. The Southeast Asian state is well known for adopting strange customs and superstitions into its legislature for arbitrary reasons that rarely make sense to outsiders (or to the country’s own population, for that matter): in 1987 for example, under the instruction of a military government leader who was guided by his arcane beliefs, the Marxist state wiped out many of its citizens’ savings overnight by re-denominating the national monetary system into a currency based upon the requirement that all of its banknotes must be divisible by the number nine.

'HOP-Magazine' article: Wearable tec' - geek or chic?

When was the last time you saw somebody talking in the street on their Bluetooth headset and thought “That guy looks SO cool”? Hmmm…I'm still racking my brains too. Wearable technology is a nascent trend that’s been around since the days of Star Trek but it rarely ever looks like something you’d actually want to be seen wearing. Now that it’s got the attention of some major players in the fashion and technology industries, however, could things be about to change? The Apple Watch, Fitbit Flex, Google Glass, Nike FuelBand – are these the front runners of a style that's going to be around for the long-haul and become as mainstream and popular as the smartphone itself has become, or are they destined to be labelled as future fashion fails? Let's look at some current offerings.

Useful doesn't have to mean utilitarian: the Puls Smartcuff, recently launched by ex-Black Eyed Pea Will.i.am in collaboration with designer Zaha Hadid, is a seriously good looking bit of kit that offers genuine innovations – such as having its own SIM card so you don't need a mobile phone to use it – that set it apart from offerings by Apple and Samsung.

Futuristic is not a word we’d use, however, to describe this attempt at wearable tech' by the girls' team on 'The Apprentice'. Those solar-panelled shoulder pads look distinctively 'Dallas' circa 1981...more gin, Sue Ellen?!

The Pebble Steel pulls off the neat trick of being a useful smartwatch that is compatible with Apple and Android phones whilst actually managing to looking vaguely desirable and not like the bastard offspring of a Casio calculator and a piece of jewellery from PoundLand.

Talking of bizarre mutations, here we have the Adidas “Barricade” trainers with built-in LED Twitter display. Designed for Olympic athletes to check their feed for encouraging tweets from fans as they tie their shoe-laces before events, we can only shudder and hope that these monstrosities never hit the High Street

The HelloMEMi bracelet, on the other hand (or wrist, to be more specific) isn't so much visually offensive as just plain pointless. It vibrates when your iPhone receives a call, text or calendar alert. All very useful for around £100 but, erm, doesn't the iPhone do that already?

Wearable technology really does have the potential to be the next big thing but, in order to have enduring mass appeal, manufacturers need to address some key points:
Product design will need to give greater attention to form and not just function with only a vague nod to aesthetics. Overtly masculine, sport-centric pieces do not always appeal to female consumers; a recent survey showed that women actually buy more tablets, laptops and smartphones than men* so this is a market that companies ignore at their peril.
The technological aspect of the product should not be too conspicuous: it's all very well living on the bleeding edge, but nobody wants to see the messy bloodstains.
The item should address a need that consumers actually care about enough to purchase a device for and keep it charged up. Which brings us on to battery life – if your cool new piece of kit is so power hungry that you don't dare venture more than fifty feet from an electricity socket, it's going to have limited appeal.
Apart from a few collaborations (such as on the Smartcuff, above), wearable tech' is almost virgin territory for designers and is ripe for tech-savvy fashion houses to gain first-mover advantage with some slick, contemporary designs that start making serious in-roads into a business which is forecast to be worth $10 billion by 2016 and can only get bigger in the future.

Chinese supermodel Liu Wen stares alluringly from the cover of the November issue of Vogue China, proudly wearing an 18-carat gold Apple Watch teamed with a striped Celine dress, in what is the first fashion magazine appearance of the new device anywhere in the world. The twenty-six year old ex-Victoria’s Secret model was also seen last month at an Apple Watch event held at top French store Colette during Paris Fashion Week, at which many of the fashion industry’s great and good (icy editor-in-chief of American Vogue, Anna Wintour, and slightly preposterous poseur-with-a-ponytail, Karl Lagerfeld, to name just two) were also on show.

Geek may have been chic for a while but Apple are now banking on us binning our Cartiers, TAG’s and Rolexes and queueing up outside the glass, wood and steel temples-to-cool that are their retail stores to buy their latest American-designed, Chinese-made ‘must-have’. Apple’s head of design, Chingford-boy-made-good, Jonny Ive, and seventeen of his Californian colleagues had been holed-up in Cupertino working secretly for three years on the device, which is not due for release until early next year, but there is nothing secret about the company’s desire to grab themselves a hefty chunk of the $1.5 trillion a year fashion business, after having utterly conquered the technology market in which it has made its fortune; Apple is now worth $119 billion and is officially recognized as the “world’s most valuable brand”. It has also been adding heavy hitters from the fashion industry to its payroll. In September 2013 it hired Yves Saint Laurent ex-CEO Paul Deneve as VP of “special projects”; Paul has also run other fashion and luxury goods companies including Nina Ricci and Lanvin. Then, this year, it hired the former head of Burberry, Angela Ahrendts, to be its “Senior VP of Retail and Online Stores”.

Apple is also starting to learning that consumers like to be given choices: the Watch will come in many different options rather than just as a “one size fits all, take it or leave it” offering like the original 2007 iPhone. It will be available in three ‘collections’ starting at $349 for the basic version, ranging through to the upscale ‘Edition’ which is expected to retail for thousands of dollars (although Apple have not confirmed pricing yet), putting it firmly in luxury territory. It will be pitched against some stiff competition in a booming market for wearable tech’ which has already seen some collaborations with the world of fashion: designer Tory Burch has designed accessories for the Fitbit range of activity trackers, Diane von Furstenberg has added her own slant on eyewear to Google Glass and Diesel have announced a range of wrist-bands to accompany the Samsung Gear smart-watch; traditional high-end watchmakers TAG-Heuer have also recently announced plans to make a smart-watch although Jean-Claude Biver, head of watch-making at parent company LVMH, was at pains to point out that their offering would not, of course, be just another copy of the Apple Watch.

Apple have also made it clear that they are serious about building sales in China. Their turnover in the region has increased by 22% in nine months, compared to just 5% for sales generally. This fact may well have influenced their choice of Liu Wen, who is a popular role-model to many young consumers in China, as the face of the Apple Watch in its worldwide debut, and also in their decision to feature it in a Chinese magazine, rather than an American or European edition.


One challenge for the Californian company’s latest creation does seem clear, however: the majority of consumers under the age of thirty - a key target market for this type of product - do not wear a wrist-watch. They have grown up peeking at their iPhone (other mobile communication devices are available!) when they want to check the time, so the idea of having to buy, lug around and keep charged-up yet another piece of kit which only duplicates some of the functions that their mobile phone already gives them may possibly not be a big turn-on to some. And, from the point of view of being a desirable fashion accessory, as many of the lukewarm reviews given to it by fashion editors at its launch bear witness, it’s not exactly so hot that it’s going to be the to-die-for item next season...or is it? What does seem certain is that this will be only the first offering in a line of products designed to catapult Apple from being a purely computers-and-phones manufacturer into a premier league player in the fashion business…and if their previous success is anything to go by, that’s got be worth keeping an eye on, especially if you’re the competition. Either way, whatever you think of Apple’s first major foray into the world of fashion, lifestyle and luxury…please, just don’t call it an iWatch.
